Desmond Healey - Sculptor
Desmond Healy The Prodigal Son
Most of my recent work has been painted at night, often by the light of a single street lamp. This yellowed chiaroscuro, with the figures emerging from an impenetrable darkness, has allowed me to start to get past the received ideas of representation. Faces are cut by shadow, space looms up and collides with form and certainties of appearance dissolve in this half-light. To paint this is to be simultaneously arrested and inspired by our consciousness of the visible world.
